Course Overview
-

This unit offers students the opportunity to gain an understanding of the factors that influence behaviour and to explore and evaluate theoretical approaches to supporting children and young people in practice.


Students will examine contemporary concepts including the importance of resilience and developing self-confidence and self-awareness.


The course will examine the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences and identify how to support children and young people affected by these.

 

What You Will Learn
-

Students will investigate the following:

  • The terminology in common use when discussing children’s behaviour
  • Current behavioural theory, including psychological approaches
  • Influences on behaviour
  • The importance of understanding age and ability appropriate behaviour
  • Restorative techniques
  • Strategies to support children and young people’s behaviour, including children with additional support needs

 

Placement Information
-

Students should be in a workplace with children and young people on an employed or voluntary basis as they will be asked to record and evaluate strategies employed to support children and young people in practice.

Entry Requirements
-

  • A minimum of two Highers (one of which should be English) or pass in a relevant NC at SCQF Level 6 or SVQ Level 2 Children’s Care Learning and Development/Social Services Children and Young People
  • Or a qualification at or above SCQF 6 that demonstrates ability in research, essay writing and reports, together with the experience of working with children
  • Applicants with significant experience of working with children will also be considered please detail this in your personal statement

 

English Proficiency Requirements
-
  • IELTS at 6.0 or equivalent
How the course is assessed
-
Assessments include case studies, a report and group work.
Progression And Articulation Routes
-
  • Further study options could include  courses such as the HNC Childhood Practice or the PDA Childhood Practice at SCFQ 8 or SVQ options
  • This unit is ideal for people building credits towards study at a higher level
