Course Overview
-

This qualification will provide you with structured opportunities to experience the culture required for successful employment in the sports coaching industry. It will allow you to develop confidence and interpersonal and leadership skills while enhancing your knowledge and expertise in sports coaching.


It will enable you to understand the basic concepts of sports coaching with sports development and provide a foundation for the development of your skills. You’ll be able to explore and demonstrate your own physical activity and healthy living and foster your interest and enthusiasm in this area.

You will be introduced to methods and techniques used in the sports industry which could ultimately lead to a range of employment opportunities. You’ll be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning and develop transferable and employability skills such as; independent research, planning, evaluating, presenting and working in a team.


Your coaching skills will be developed and assessed in a workplace situation as a core part of this course - particularly valuable real-life experience for your future career.

In year two you may also have the opportunity to experience learning and assessment on a residential week in Europe.

What You Will Learn

In year one you’ll focus on areas such as;
  • Sports Coaching Theory and Practice
  • Sports Psychology
  • Anatomy and Physiology and strength and conditioning. 

In year two, you will further develop the understanding, skills and competencies gained in year one studying areas such as:
  • Improving Coaching for Sport
  • Coaching of Sports Performance
  • Nutrition.

Opportunities to gain nationally recognised sports specific coaching awards may also be presented within the duration of the course.

Your college week will consist of 16 hours of class contact spread over 3-5 days depending on your timetable.

Entry Requirements
-
  • A minimum of 2 Higher passes at grade A-C.
  • Other relevant and similarly levelled qualifications will be considered such as:
  • NPAs at Higher level in appropriate subject areas (Sport and Recreation/Sports Development/Achieving Excellence in Sport)
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Subsidiary Diploma in Sport
  • S/NVQs at level 3
  • SGAs at Higher level in an appropriate subject area (Sport/Fitness).
  • A minimum of 2 GCE AS and/or A levels at grade A-C in relevant subjects.


You may be a candidate who comes from a non-traditional route such as a mature returnee or one who wishes to change career or perhaps retrain following a career break to raise a family. In these or other cases we would take into account work experience, life skills and potential ability. You may be expected to submit a brief written assignment or essay, before the interview, to provide some indication of academic standing and communication skills.

How the course is assessed
-
  • For both years, course assessment is ongoing throughout two 18 week blocks. Methods of assessment are varied and can include: written assessments, oral presentations, group exercises, projects, case studies and practical exercises.

Information on Test/Auditions/Interview Requirements

The interview process will consist of:

  1. Course information presentation
  2. One to one interview with a member of the sports team
  3. Short written piece of work based on your aims, objectives and personal goals
  4. Practical assessment to include sports and problem solving/team building activities
Progression And Articulation Routes
-
  • From HND year one you could progress on to HND year two or access a range of Degree level courses at Universities across Scotland and the UK (entry point at year one or two) in relevant subject areas such as Sport and Exercise Science, Sports Studies, Coaching and Developing Sports, Physical Education or Physical Activity and Health related studies.
  • From HND year two it may be possible to access a similar range of related Degree level courses at year 2 or 3 of their programmes. Examples of which could include: Year 2 of BSc (Hons) Sports Studies at University of Stirling upon successful completion of the HND.  Year 3 of a range of BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science Degrees at Edinburgh Napier University.

You may gain direct entry to employment in a coaching or sports development capacity in a range of fitness or sports based environments such as:
  • Private sport and fitness clubs.
  • Local authority sports centres and clubs.
  • Hotels and conference centres with health and fitness facilities.
  • Sports clubs that require coaching and sports development personnel to support training players/athletes.
  • School and community sports clubs and projects.
