Course Overview

HNC Sports Therapy is an innovative one-year course that provides you with an industry-recognised qualification and the knowledge and skills needed to work as a Soft Tissue Therapist. You will use a wide range of techniques to treat a variety of sports people; from those who play as a hobby to professional sports players. 


Edinburgh College has exceptional industry connections and you will have the opportunity to work with local sports clubs, businesses and the wider College community through our clinics and health and?well-being?initiatives. You will gain vital work experience at national and international sporting events and learn hands-on and essential skills. These opportunities will assist you in gaining the required number of practice hours needed to demonstrate your competence as a sports therapist in your future career. This course offers a first aid qualification and the opportunity to gain a specific award that will enable you to work pitchside. This course will prepare you?for direct entry into year two HND Sports Therapy or a range Sport and Exercise related university degree programmes at year two. 


What You Will Learn

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the body 
  • How to apply a range of treatments and skills in assessment techniques to enable safe and effective client screening 
  • Appropriate after and home care 
  • Management of sports injuries in order to analyse, plan and evaluate appropriate soft tissue treatment  
  • Follow an?evidence-based?approach to treatment planning 
  • How to implement working practices which meet currently accepted professional standards 

Entry Requirements

  • Two Higher passes at grade C or above (preferably English and one science)  
  • Core skills profile at SCQF Level 5 with Communication or equivalent at SCQF Level 6 
  • Or two A levels at grade D and relevant GSCE equivalent core skills? 
  • A National Qualification at SCQF Level 6 
  • S/NVQ Level 3, or equivalent, in an appropriate subject areas such as Sports Massage, Exercise and Fitness or Sports Development may be considered along with the appropriate core skills profile previously stated 
  • If you do not meet the formal requirements but you have relevant work or life experience, or you are a mature student you are welcome to apply 
  • You may be expected to submit a brief written assignment or essay before the?interview to provide some indication of academic standing and communication skills 
  • You should currently be participating regularly in exercise and fitness activities 
  • You must be able to achieve a suitable level of clearance through the PVG scheme 

English Proficiency Requirements
  • IELTS 6.5
How the course is assessed

You will be continually assessed through class-based assessment, practical observations, report writing, presentations, logbooks, portfolio work and assignment tasks. 

Information on Test/Auditions/Interview Requirements

  • You will be invited to attend an interview where you will be expected to show your knowledge of and active participation in sport and fitness activities along with knowledge of the role of a sports/soft tissue therapist and/or sports physiotherapist 
  • The interview session may include practical elements based on basic soft tissue therapy applications, written work on your knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the body 
  • There will be a one to one discussion with a member of the sport and fitness team
