English Language Courses

Edinburgh College is a centre of excellence for English Language programmes and is one of the largest year-round providers of English Language courses in Scotland.

All our courses are validated by the British Council accreditation scheme Accreditation UK.

Our staff are well qualified and have experience of working with students from all over the world. Specific start dates for each of the courses are available on request.

General English as a Foreign Language

This course is designed to help you increase your confidence in using English, to improve your grammar and pronunciation and practise your language skills in a range of everyday situations. There will be great emphasis on developing oral skills as well as building on your vocabulary.

August 2014 and January 2015

Course Duration

Students can choose from courses lasting between 18 weeks and 1 year.

Class details

17 class hours per week, plus additional directed self-study. Maximum 20 students per class.

Entry Requirements

Courses starting in January and August run at all levels from Beginner to Higher Intermediate.

Qualifications

Students will receive an Edinburgh College certification on completion. Depending on your level, you may be able to enter for SQA National Qualification ESOL Units at Access 2, Access 3 and Intermediate 1, or a Cambridge ESOL examination such as First Certificate in English (FCE). The cost of Cambridge exams is not included in the course fees.

Academic English

This course is for students who want to improve their use of English for entry to university to other higher level study. You will develop listening, reading, writing and speaking skills, as well as improve your grammar and pronunciation. The course develops study skills and focuses on preparation for the IELTS test. Students taking this course should have firm plans to enter higher education in the UK.

Upper Intermediate level English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent).

College certification on completion. You can also take an IELTS test at a local test centre on completion. (Cost not included in course fees).
