Costume Design

Costume design is an integral part of the performing arts and designers have an important role to play in ensuring costumes support other elements of the performance. As well as being visually appealing, costumes help audiences understand the character, style and period of the production. There are lots of considerations involved in costume design so while you will have the opportunity to showcase your creativity, it will also involve working with others to bring the whole performance together.

In our Costume for Stage and Screen HND, you will watch your ideas come to life as you plan out daring concepts, refine and fine-tune your ideas to create stunning final products.

Studying at Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS)

Edinburgh College is home to Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) which is one of the country’s largest and most respected centres for training in the Performing Arts. With a purpose-built theatre, dedicated rehearsal spaces and opportunities to showcase your talent, PASS is a great place to start your journey in performing arts.

At PASS you can access our fantastic facilities and training at a relatively low cost compared with private institutions. Find out more about course fees on the Funding and Fees section of our website.

Get industry standard training

At PASS our students receive extensive industry standard training to equip them with the skills needed to progress on to further study at university or to gain employment. On this course you will explore costume design in our bespoke workshops and build your knowledge in the history of costume and theatre. You will learn professional design techniques using sewing machines, practical skills in pattern cutting and costume construction, and professional practice design.

Our HND students Beata and Suzanna experimented with lots of fabrics and materials including shells and feathers to create their final Elizabethan costumes for an exhibition. Watch the video to find out more about the process.

Gain professional experience

In partnership with one of our industry connections, you will be able to gain experience in a professional setting through a practical work placement. Previous students have completed their work placement at Scottish Opera and The Royal Lyceum. Your work placement will allow you to gain professional experience and make connections within the industry to open doors in the future.

Our supportive and experienced lecturers will have your best interests at heart throughout your journey with us, so whether you go on to further study or into employment, the team at PASS are here to help you reach your potential.

Our students have gone on to work in wardrobe departments in TV, film and theatre cross the UK working as costume supervisors, wardrobe assistants and dressers. Many alumni now work at Scottish Opera, National Theatre for Scotland and in the West End.
