An Edinburgh College student is looking forward to combining her studies with dedicating her time to being a champion for The John Byrne Award.
HND Contemporary Art Practice student Annie Donaldson was successful in applying to become Edinburgh College’s John Byrne Award Ambassador. The Award publicly recognises creative pieces of work that prompt thought, discussion and debate about personal and societal values.
Annie’s role will involve encouraging fellow students to consider their own values and ask critical questions through creative work. She joins a team of ambassadors who represent and promote the award across colleges and universities in Scotland.
Students were invited to apply for the ambassador role which involves speaking to groups of students, co-ordinating The John Byrne Award marketing in Edinburgh College, and writing blog articles for The John Byrne Award website.
The scholarship is funded by the Edinburgh College Development Trust – the independent charity which supports students at the College and has been enabled by a three-way partnership between The John Byrne Award, the Edinburgh College Development Trust, and Edinburgh College.
Annie Donaldson said: “I took part in The John Byrne Award during my sixth year at high school in 2016. The competition made me think in a different way about my values, it built discussions with my peers that reaffirmed what is important to me at pivotal points in my education. I feel as though decisions I’ve made since then have been more aligned with the changes I want to see in the world.
“I’m excited to be chosen for the role as Edinburgh College ambassador and to have the chance to encourage other people to participate in the award. I hope it allows them to develop their values in a similar way to how I did.”
The John Byrne Award Chief Executive Niall Dolan said: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Annie to our team. We have no doubt that Annie’s critical awareness, passion for the role, and personality will make her an excellent ambassador.
“Annie will be working closely with The John Byrne Award staff, as well as other John Byrne Award ambassadors in other universities and colleges in Scotland, to encourage as many people as possible to use creativity to explore their values.
“A big thank you goes to Edinburgh College Development Trust for funding the partnership, and Edinburgh College for hosting the partnership and supporting The John Byrne Award.”
