Edinburgh College students help to raise £1million for Prince’s Trust Scotland

Twenty-two students from Edinburgh College’s Catering and Hospitality department have helped to raise £1million to change the lives of young people across Scotland.

The students got a taste of glitz and glamour helping to serve up lunch for 420 ‘old bags’ at the five-star Prestonfield House at an annual Prince’s Trust Scotland fundraiser on Friday.

Lunch with an Old Bag brings together many of Scotland’s most glamorous and stylish ladies, known affectionately as ‘Old Bags’. The event was named in order to address the unnecessary labelling of young people who can so easily and unfairly be assigned to categories they do not fit, and to raise funds for the many programmes The Prince’s Trust runs to help young people get into education, get a job or start a business.

Edinburgh College students played a key role in the event, preparing a three-course lunch consisting of: smoked guinea fowl served with duck liver parfait, pickled girolles, balsamic fig and pork cracking; Tanquery-cured smoked salmon with horseradish crumb served with salsa verde, oyster veloute and dill rosti; and lemon meringue pie with blackcurrant sorbet.

Students also provided front of house services, serving drinks and canapes to the guests throughout the afternoon.

Following lunch, an auction of luxury prizes took place to raise funds to support young people across Scotland. An original ‘Mickey and Minnie’ art work by renowned street artist Mr Brainwash sold for £100,000, while other prizes included a shopping trip to New York on the Queen Mary 2 and a Malachite Hermes Birkin handbag worth £24,000.

Entertainment was provided by musical act Björn Again, while television personality Christopher Biggins was also in attendance.

City and Guilds Level 1 Food and Beverage Service student Dillon Wilson said: “It was great to work at Lunch with an Old Bag at Prestonfield House.

“It was quite an intense experience being thrown in at the deep end, but a brilliant experience and one that I really enjoyed this early into my college course.”

Prestonfield’s owner James Thomson OBE said: “Many thanks go to the Edinburgh College students for the amazing service and support they provided us with at Friday’s Lunch with an Old Bag.

“It was a memorable day for many reasons but not least that it was our tenth anniversary and we achieved our goal of raising over £1 million for the Prince‘s Trust in Scotland. This in turn will help the Trust to change the lives of an additional 1000 young people in Scotland this year which is truly remarkable.

“I cannot thank students enough for the part they played in this huge achievement.”
