Faces of Glow – Jill McKirdy

HND Acting and Performance student Jill McKirdy will be performing The Riots, written by Gillian Slovo, as part of this year’s Glow festival. Jill will join her fellow students in the verbatim and political performance which builds a real-time picture of the London riots of summer 2011. She told us about her about her experience of being a part of the performance.

“We’ve just finished a concentrated four-week rehearsal process and are now into production week. There’s been a lot of sweat, tears and laughter which have all contributed to what I hope will be a really engaging and dynamic show.

Rehearsals have been intensive and challenging, in a good way. The subject matter is really physically and emotionally charged, it’s a verbatim piece which means we’ve all become completely invested in the real-life people we’re playing and their experiences.

It has been a great experience working with everyone as part of this performance. We’ve all supported and encouraged each other to push ourselves to give the best performance possible. It has been so much fun coming into college and being inspired by each other every day. We’re all really proud of what we’ve created.

Coming to the end of my HND year one, I can see how much I’ve developed as a performer. I’m freer, more confident and more curious.

I’m really looking forward to sharing our performance with people, hopefully giving the audience an intense, exciting and entertaining experience – as well as encouraging conversation and debate around the issues raised.”

Catch Jill in The Riots on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 May, 2pm and 7pm at PASS Theatre.
