The UK’s coastal and seafaring communities are being asked to help track down former students and staff of Leith Nautical College for a reunion event in Edinburgh in September. Organisers are locating old colleagues, classmates and friends, whose maritime careers have taken them to ports across the UK and the globe.
Everyone connected to the former maritime training centre is invited for a weekend of activities in Edinburgh on 29 and 30 September 2018. Tickets are available until 31 July.
The reunion will mark 40 years since Prince Charles opened a new home for the college at what is now Edinburgh College’s Milton Road Campus. Leith Nautical College itself dates back further, to 1855.
An evening reception will take place on Saturday 29 September at the Milton Road Campus. Leith Nautical College students trained there from 1978 until its closure in 1988, when its training provision transferred to Glasgow College of Nautical Studies.
South Leith Parish Church – which has historic links with the maritime community – will host an exhibition about the history of Leith Nautical College and guests are invited to bring along their mementoes. The church will also hold a service of thanksgiving on the Sunday morning.
The event is being organised by Edinburgh College Development Trust, the independent charity that supports students at Edinburgh College.
Already, 32 former students and staff have confirmed they will come to the reunion, travelling from as far as Australia.
Gordon MacFadzean, former head of Electric and Electronic Engineering at Leith Nautical College, said: “Students of Leith Nautical College have travelled far and wide in the course of their work, playing vital roles in modern maritime history. This is a fantastic opportunity for people to get back together and catch up, and I’m sure there will be plenty of incredible tales to swap.
“I hope that any former students and staff will be able to come along and that they can spread the word to anyone they’re still in touch with. It would be wonderful to see everyone again.”
