Niamh is Marketing Society’s Star Creative Student

An Edinburgh College Graphic Design student has been named Star Creative Student at the Marketing Society Star Awards for the fourth year running.

Niamh Curran, the latest student to receive the accolade, was presented with the award at this year’s ceremony after impressing judges with her work.

Twenty-year-old Niamh, from Linlithgow, beat off stiff competition from other college and university students across Scotland to be crowned the winner, after submitting a written application for the award in response to a real client brief set by STV. She was one of six finalists selected to pitch their design concepts to the client and panel of judges.

After wowing the panel with her design work, Niamh headed along to the awards ceremony with Edinburgh College lecturers Helena Good and Chris Hughes, where she was announced as the winner and presented with the award by sponsor The Union marketing agency.

Niamh joined more than 500 marketing professionals at Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange for the awards ceremony. She is the fourth Edinburgh College student to win the Star Creative Student Award in as many years, with students picking up six of the last seven accolades.

As a result of the award, Niamh will do a paid work placement with The Union marketing agency in the summer.

Niamh said: “I couldn’t believe it when I was shortlisted for this award. The project is unique because you have to initially do a written submission and, after being told I was horrendous at English in school and getting an F in my English exam, it was such a surprise that my written submission was shortlisted.

“I was really looking forward to the award ceremony and to being in a room with so many talented creatives, who could potentially give me a job. It was such a lovely feeling to win, knowing I must be doing something right. It was the cherry on the top of the cake. I loved every minute of it and couldn’t believe how many people were wanting to talk to me. It was a perfect way to round-off my three years at Edinburgh College.”

During her time at college, Niamh, along with fellow Graphic Design student Holly McNie, conceived and delivered the Graphic Design Ambassadors project. This involves Graphic Design students going into schools to work directly with S3 pupils in art and design and CDT classes to give them the benefits of their own creative and education experiences.

The project has since developed to the Daydream Believers School Engagement Programme. This year 24 schools participated in the programme.

Helena Good said: “Niamh is so deserving of this award. She came up with an innovative solution to meet the design brief set by STV and impressed the panel with her creativity and professionalism.

“The award ceremony was a great night with lots of industry people in the room coming over to speak to Niamh and congratulate her on her win. Whatever she turns her hand to, Niamh does it with all of her heart. Throughout her time at the college she’s not only inspired young people through the Creative Ambassadors project but also her classmates and lecturers.”

Edinburgh College Graphic Design graduate Christina Giannakou, a designer at Always Be Content agency, was also recognised at the awards, having been shortlisted in the Rising Creative Star category.
