Compelling costumes and choreography inspired by the work of acclaimed artist Jenny Saville will be part of a one-off performance by Edinburgh College’s Dance students at a major Edinburgh gallery this weekend.

Fragments & Gestures: Performing Jenny Saville will feature BA (Hons) Dance students from the college wearing outfits designed by Performance Costume Masters students at Edinburgh College of Art.

Five students will perform original work – which explores ideas related to the body, performance, process and materials – alongside the inspirational artworks from Jenny Saville and several of her artistic peers.

The free 40-minute shows are taking place at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art One at 11am and 2pm on Saturday 5 May.

As part of this project students were asked to respond to the methods in NOW, a series of six exhibitions which bring together the best of contemporary art in Scotland, the UK and internationally.

This third instalment features the work of Jenny Saville, Sara Barker, Christine Borland, Robin Rhode, Markus Schinwald, and Catherine Street.

Drawing on all of the artists’ work, original outfits and choreography were created after an initial two-day workshop between dance students from Edinburgh College and design students from Edinburgh College of Art.

Edinburgh College curriculum manager for Performing Arts Ethelinda Lashley-Scott said: “The collaboration with Edinburgh College of Art and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a fantastic opportunity for our Dance students to take inspiration from the methods, themes and ideas explored in Jenny Saville’s work and to express this in dance form. Our dancers have enjoyed working with the Performance Costume students on a collaborative approach to costume and movement. They’re really looking forward to performing their choreographed pieces on Saturday and to showcasing the brilliant designs by the Costume students in an iconic venue.”

Fragments & Gestures is supported by the Jenny Saville Foundation.

The event is part of an ongoing relationship between the college, Edinburgh College of Art and the National Galleries of Scotland. Previous work has been based on the art of Louise Bourgeois and Roy Lichtenstein.
