Photobombing babies, a wee bit of Hollywood stardust and, most importantly, the fine achievements of students made for a tremendous celebration at Edinburgh College’s annual Prize Giving ceremony.

More than 70 students gathered with 200 family, friends, staff and guests to celebrate their outstanding work over the last year.

The college’s Prize Giving – on Friday 9 June – honoured further education students across the whole curriculum for their achievements over the year. Students received awards from the college’s four faculties – Creative Industries; Engineering and Built Environment; Health, Wellbeing and Social Sciences; and Tourism, Hospitality and Business.

Forth One daytime presenter Micky Gavin was the compere for the evening at the college’s Milton Road Campus.

Prize Giving celebrated the academic achievements and dedication of students, as well as the commitment many have to juggling home life and work to succeed in their studies. The prizes included Recognition Awards, awarded to those who have gone that extra mile to succeed, Academic Excellence Awards and each curriculum area’s Student of the Year award.

College partners including businesses and local politicians joined the celebrations, with some sponsoring awards. Awards sponsors included former Edinburgh College student and Guardians of the Galaxy and Dr Who actress Karen Gillan (who sent a video congratulating the winner of the Karen Gillan Award for Performing Arts), hairdresser to the Royals Denise McAdam, Scottish arts patron Richard Demarco and top Edinburgh chef Neil Forbes.

Edinburgh College Principal Annette Bruton said:

Prize Giving is an opportunity for the college to recognise the excellence of our students. Every one of our prize winners has been nominated for their outstanding approach to their studies and learning and we are delighted to be able to celebrate their success with their family and friends. Whether the award winners choose to continue their studies with the college, or progress to university or the workplace, I’m confident that they have been given a great platform to succeed and we wish them all the best in whatever they choose to go on to do in the future.

Other awards sponsors included the Scottish Rugby Union, Wella, the RSPB, the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA), and the college’s own spa facility, the Club, and its Waterfront Nursery.

A list of all the winners can be found in our Prize Giving Programme

We wish all prizewinners good luck in the next step of their journey.
