Service with a big smile – Sophie collects silver medal at WorldSkills UK awards

An Edinburgh College Cookery and Hospitality student has picked up a silver medal at a prestigious awards ceremony following her performance in a heat of the UK’s largest student skills competition.

Level 3 Professional Cookery student Sophie Taylor collected her medal at a ceremony held at the City of Glasgow College.

The win follows Sophie’s performance in the Restaurant Service competition at a national qualifier of WorldSkills UK held in Glasgow in June 2018 when she was a Level 2 student.

As part of the competition, Sophie was tasked with cooking and presenting flambé bananas, a guerdon style Caesar salad speciality coffees for the judges to taste as well as creating a stylish and traditional table plan.

Sophie said: “It’s really amazing to have been awarded second place and to get a silver medal. It was a brilliant experience taking part in the competition for the first time and I hope to enter again this year and hopefully be even more successful.”

Professional Cookery curriculum leader Stephanie Tanner said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Sophie won this silver medal for her performance last year – she thoroughly deserved it. Her performance for a Level 2 student with no experience of competing was fantastic.

Sophie’s success rounded off a fantastic year of WorldSkills UK performances for Edinburgh College in 2017/18.

Tony Mailer and Calum Munro won gold medals for their outstanding performance in a series of skills challenges at WorldSkills UK Live in Birmingham in November. Tony was named first place in the automotive technology category while Calum won the Stonemasonry competition.

In addition, Hamish Innes claimed bronze in Stonemasonry and Jed Smith was highly commended for his performance in Bricklaying.

Principal Audrey Cumberford said: “Congratulations to all of our students who have competed to an incredibly high standard in their respective disciplines at WorldSkills UK over the past year.

“They have represented themselves and the College fantastically well and I’m sure that their experiences will give them additional confidence and determination to succeed even more during their time at College and in their future careers.”
