Student Fringe Festival show rehearsals in full swing at Granton Campus

Rehearsals for a Fringe Festival drama production which showcases upcoming talent from across Scotland’s colleges are in full swing at Granton Campus.

‘Propeller’ – co-created by The Network Ensemble, The Scottish Drama Training Network (SDTN) and award-winning director Caitlin Skinner – will be performed by eight acting students at Edinburgh’s Pleasance Theatre for the duration of the world-renowned Fringe Festival.

The play explores the themes of power and the possibility of change with students using the skills they’ve learned to date to convey a sense of determination and willpower within people in the face of frustration or adversity.

Rehearsals are already underway, being hosted daily at the college’s Granton Campus and Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) Theatre right up until the group’s final dress rehearsal.

This is the second year of The Network Ensemble, which established in 2017 by the SDTN and the Pleasance Theatre Trust to support graduates from Scotland’s colleges and higher education institutions.

Hundreds of Performance, Design and Technical Theatre final year students and graduates have since completed a series of development workshops, auditions and interviews, held in colleges and universities across Scotland, with eight being selected to perform Caitlin Skinner’s play.

This year’s cast is Cindy Awor (Glasgow Clyde College); Isla Fairfield and Owen Cummins (Fife College); Lottie Cuthbert and Poppy Smith (Edinburgh College); Rachael Keiller, Ross Donnachie and Sophie Maclean (New College Lanarkshire).

SDTN director Lucy Vaughan said: “The Network Ensemble is delighted to return to the Fringe with a brand new production, director, cast and creative team for 2018. The Network Ensemble provides a transformative experience for the participants from across Scotland, in working with a professional theatre director and showcasing their work for three weeks in Edinburgh, at the world’s biggest arts Festival. The support we receive from our professional partners, and the Pleasance Theatre Trust in particular, contributes to a unique and highly sought after opportunity for our network’s graduates.”

‘Propeller’ runs from Monday 1 August to Thursday 27 August at the Pleasance Theatre. Tickets can bought here.
