Course Overview

If you have recently finished the Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and wish to progress to the next stage of learning, then this course is designed for you. The course will cover diagnostic maintenance and repair focusing on the following areas: Chassis, Transmission, Engine, Electrical and Digital Systems. 

The course is taught at Edinburgh College’s Sighthill campus in our workshops and lecture rooms by teachers with industry experience. Workshop learning will allow you to work on live vehicles to best simulate a realistic working environment. The workshops have all the necessary resources for you to fully engage in the motor vehicle industry. 

This course will prepare you for employment in the light vehicle maintenance industry or onto further study.

You will learn diagnostic techniques and develop your technical knowledge and skills in the following areas: 

  • Chassis Systems 
  • Transmission Systems 
  • Engine Systems 
  • Electrical & Digital Systems 
Entry Requirements

  • IMI Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent)  
  • National 5 Mathematics, English and one Science or Technical subject 
English Proficiency Requirements

  • IELTS 5.5
How the course is assessed

The assessment is made up of two components which are set by the awarding body: 

  • The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) set practical tasks 
  • IMI set online testing 
  • IMI written tests

  • You may be asked to attend an interview to assess if you are at the correct level for this course if you do not meet the entry requirements
