The BA (Hons) Dance and Drama degree at Edinburgh College is an intensive industry training course delivered by Kingston University. Challenge your drama and dance potential as you emerge yourself in the art of acting through critical performance techniques. This is a university-level course that will ensure you are prepared to an industry-standard to progress into a career as a portfolio artist.
You will develop a range of transferable skills to equip you for the demands of a competitive world. Actors and performers have a massive influence on society and this course aims to show you how you can become a part of that influence. As part of becoming a skilled practitioner you will critically engage in industry practices and learn how to take a simple performance idea and bring it to life.

Applied Theatre - Enables students to organise and undertake a placement with a professional theatre organisation in a range of contexts and setting to explore the role and functionality of theatre in ‘communities’. Past students have undergone placements with Tricky Hat, Scottish Youth Theatre, Surge, Firefly Arts, Strange Town, Artlink, Standeasy and WHALE Arts
Aims:
- Investigate the definition, history, concepts, and development of applied theatre in relation to key contextual factors
- Explore applied theatre practice through case studies, and experiment with a range of practical methodologies
- Train students in the skills needed to design, facilitate and evaluate an independent applied theatre project, within a chosen constituency in the local community
- Generate an understanding of current practice and debates in applied theatre, and the ability to use the understanding of key questions to develop effective community projects and opportunities for work-based learning
Learning outcomes:
- A critically informed and contextualised understanding of the chosen methodology, or methodologies, of applied theatre practice used in the placement project
- The knowledge and creativity needed to construct a practical applied theatre project based on research (Key skill: Research and Information Literacy)
- The ability to lead applied theatre processes and/or performances in the community, through the effective application of skills in facilitation
- An advanced ability to work independently as a professional in a community context, self-managing time, documentation, ethics, and legacy (Key skill: Entrepreneurship)
- The ability to reflect meaningfully upon the personal praxis demonstrated in creating, launching, and delivering the placement project
This module allows you to gain a greater understanding of current practice within a real Scottish Context whilst simultaneously interrogating your own, to arrive at a new understanding of your own Praxis as a Teaching Artist and Practitioner. </

How the course is assessed

- You will be assessed through practical, performance, portfolio and written assessments.
Please film the following criteria for audition
- Workshop Plan: You will have prepared to deliver an exercise at your audition, please film yourself talking through this activity, discuss the target group and justify how you would approach this task with said group.
- Creative Solo: You will have created a 1.5 -minute solo piece exploring one of the following themes; political corruption, Importance of social classes, cultural identities, influence of technology on the individual or gender classifications. The final choice of theme must relate into one of these four categories; therefore, you have a lot of artistic freedom as to what the focus of your solo is. Please film your solo and upload both films to a private YouTube channel, and include these on your application
Written Task
If drama is a reflection on the world in which we live and our position in it – what do you want to say? Who do you want to say it to? And how will you say it?
If your application is successful you will be invited to an online interview:
You will be interviewed by two of the BA teaching faculty who will ask you a series of key questions to further assess your suitability for the course.
