Course Overview

If you want to work with sports people in the rehabilitation of injuries this is the ideal course for you. 

The HND in Sports Therapy is a two-year practical course that includes a strong theoretical component. Providing you with an industry recognised qualification, this course develops the knowledge and skills required for you to work as a Sports Therapist delivering clinical sports massage treatments. There will be opportunities to work with local sports clubs, businesses and also the wider college community through our clinics and health and wellbeing initiatives as well as supporting national and international sporting events. These opportunities will assist you in gaining the required number of practice hours in order to demonstrate your competence in a variety of relevant techniques.

This course offers a 1st Aid qualification and on completion of year one, you will be competent in a variety of relevant techniques and have the understanding needed for safe practice. You will be able to use various modalities to treat the soft tissues of a wide range of ages and abilities of sports people who participate from a recreational level through to elite level performance. 

As you progress on to year two you’ll improve the skills, competencies and techniques learned in year one and build on the practical opportunities previously gained to enhance essential industry experience. This may include running Edinburgh College based sports clinics as well as having more responsibility at events previously attended.

What You Will Learn

In the first year of this course, you will gain detailed knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the body, learn how to apply a range of treatment modalities and skills in assessment techniques, to enable safe and effective client screening and appropriate after and home care. You will develop your understanding of the management of sports injuries in order to analyse, plan and evaluate appropriate soft tissue treatment and follow an evidence based approach to treatment planning, whilst learning how to implement working practices which meet currently accepted professional standards.

In year two you will develop the skills, competencies and techniques learned in year one in order to analyse, plan and evaluate appropriate sports therapy treatment. Year two will advance your knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body along with biomechanics and movement patterns. You will also learn taping techniques, the use of electrotherapy as a treatment, how to plan and deliver sports based rehabilitation programmes, explore the psychology of sports injury, health promotion activities and how to prepare your own business plan.   

Entry Requirements

  • 2 x Higher passes at grade C or above (preferably English and one science) and a core skills profile at SCQF level 5 with communication or equivalent at SCQF level 6 or 2 A levels at grade D and relevant GSCE equivalent core skills A National Qualification at SCQF level 6, S/NVQ level 3, or equivalent, in an appropriate subject area such as sports massage, exercise and fitness or sports development may be considered along with the appropriate core skills profile previously stated.
  • You are entering at year two you will have successfully completed year one of the HND programme (all the core units and optional units to achieve 15 credits) or the HNC in Soft Tissue Therapy with sufficient additional optional units to achieve 15 credits
  • You may be a candidate who comes from a non-traditional route such as a mature returnee or one who wishes to change career or perhaps retrain following a career break to raise a family. In these or other cases we would take into account work experience life skills and potential ability. You may be expected to submit a brief written assignment or essay before the interview to provide some indication of academic standing and communication skills.
  • You should be able to provide evidence of or are expecting to meet the minimum entry requirements in 2018. 
  • You should currently be participating regularly in exercise and fitness activities. 
  • Being able to achieve a suitable level of clearance through the PVG scheme will be expected of all applicants.

How the course is assessed

You will be assessed on an on-going basis in both practical and theoretical settings and will include assessment methods such as;

  • class based assessment
  • practical observations
  • report writing
  • presentations
  • logbooks
  • portfolio work
  • assignment tasks


Information on Test/Auditions/Interview Requirements

  • At the interview, you will be expected to show your knowledge of and active participation in sport and fitness activities along with knowledge of the role of a sports/soft tissue therapist and/or sports physiotherapist.
  • The interview session may include practical elements based on basic soft tissue therapy applications written work on your knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the body and a one to one discussion with a member of the sport and fitness team.

Progression And Articulation Routes

  • Upon successful completion of the HND programme in Sports Therapy, you may go directly into the world of work or articulate into Year 3 of Degree programmes in Sports Therapy, Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation, Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing or Sport and Exercise Science.

Career Opportunities

You may gain direct entry to employment as a Soft Tissue or Sports Therapist by setting up your own business practice or in a range of health fitness or sports based establishments such as.


  • Private health and fitness clubs and clinics. 
  • Local authority sports centres and health and fitness clubs.
  • Hotels and conference centres with health and fitness facilities. 
  • Sports clubs that require massage therapy to support training and recovery of players/athletes. 
  • Single and multi-disciplinary clinics providing sports massage treatments.
  • NHS physiotherapy assistant
