Course overview

The BA (Hons) Dance and Drama degree at Edinburgh College is an intensive industry training course delivered by Kingston University. Challenge your drama and dance potential as you emerge yourself in the art of dance through critical performance techniques. This is a university-level course that will ensure you are prepared to an industry-standard to progress into a career as a portfolio artist. As part of becoming a skilled practitioner you will critically engage in industry practices and learn how to take a simple performance idea and bring it to life.

You will develop a range of transferable skills to equip you for the demands of a competitive world.

Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) has a range of exceptional professional facilities including the Pass studio theatre as well as dance, acting and aerial studios

Placement information

Access to Dance - Enables students to organise and undertake a 40 - 120-hour placement with a professional dance organisation in a career path of their choice such as 

  • Community dance teaching
  • Dance education
  • Community dance management

Aims

  • Develop students skills and experience in professional dance contexts
  • Enable students to apply their knowledge and understanding of relevant cultural theory and dance practice to the experience and analysis of professional dance practice
  • Enable students to test and evaluate their own skills in relation to the professional workplace

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate independent organisational and communicative skills in arranging a work placement
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, self-management and professionalism in undertaking a work placement
  • Utilise and develop their own skills and knowledge in the context of a work placement
  • Critically evaluate their contribution to a professional workplace in relation to the specific project aims
  • Demonstrate an awareness of their professional work to the wider context of the arts and dance industry (for example national policy, theoretical models or frameworks)

This module allows you to gain a greater understanding of current practice and expectations when working in the professional dance industry with a range of contexts and settings allowing you the opportunity to start to define who you are as a practitioner, artist or creator.

  • You will be assessed through practical, portfolio and written assessments

Entry requirements

  • HND Dance Artist or Professional Dance performance (Graded Unit A/B result)
  • HND Musical Theatre with a Graded unit A/B result

 

 

 

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

Please film and submit the following criteria for audition (This can be in the form of YouTube links or alternative methods) 

  • Ballet: (Barre work) Please perform the following exercises: Plie, Tendu, Ron de Jambe, Frappe, Grand Battement. (Centre Work) Adage, Pirouette, Petit Allegro,  
  • Jazz: 1-minute Jazz combination showing your flexibility, musicality, technique, style and performance 
  • Contemporary: A series of contemporary exercises including roll downs, floor work, triplets and contractions. 
  • Creative Solo: You will have to submit a 1.5 -minute solo piece exploring one of the following themes; political corruption, Importance of social classes, cultural identities, influence of technology on the individual or gender classifications. The final choice of theme must relate into one of these four categories; therefore, you have a lot of artistic freedom as to what the focus of your solo will be.  

Written Task Write 500 words which addresses the following question: 

If dance is a reflection on the world in which we live and our position in it – what do you want to say? Who do you want to say it to? And how will you say it? 

If your application is successful you will be invited to an online interview: 

You will be interviewed by two of the BA teaching faculty who will ask you a series of key questions to further assess your suitability for the course.
