Course overview

If your first language is not English, you can study ESOL courses at college. Our courses will help you to improve your English language skills for doing your schoolwork as well as offering ESOL qualifications at National 3, National 4, National 5 and Higher. We will assess your level of English to find the right class for you.

The purpose of the National 3 and 4 courses is to help pupils who are struggling with school work because of their English language level and the SQA units are a good way to measure progress. The National 5 and Higher courses, as well as helping with school work, offer the chance to get qualifications which allow you to progress to mainstream college courses or university

Our after-school SCP ESOL courses will include options to study at Drummond High School in the city centre, but we are also offering on-line courses at National 5 and Higher level which will include digital classrooms and open learning.  Tha platform for digital delivery will be Microsoft Teams and Moodle.  High quality teaching enhanced with the use of technology will facilitate the development of students’ digital skills.

What you will learn

ESOL National 3  (equivalent to Modern Languages National 5 competency level)

Pupils will develop English for reading, listening, and speaking by taking part in a range of activities. In addition, they will learn how to write formal and informal letters and short articles. They will build their vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, study skills and confidence.

The courses cover a range of topics relevant to life and study in Scotland

A blended model of delivery will consist of face-to-face classroom delivery as well as asynchronous learning (independent learning with teacher support). This will accommodate pupils’ individual needs and allow them to study at their own pace.

ESOL National 4

Pupils will develop English for reading, listening, and speaking by taking part in a range of activities. In addition, they will learn how to prepare presentations and write formal and informal letters and articles. They will build their vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, study skills and confidence.
