Course overview

This is a 6-month course (from January to June ) and is ideal if you are looking to start your career within the Hospitality/Cookery Industry – it will give you the opportunity to try out both Cookery and working in our new College Cafe before deciding on your career path.

The course will introduce you to a variety of techniques needed to work in a professional kitchen and a Cafe – you will develop your skills in areas such as:

  • Food and beverage service skills
  • Kitchen skills
  • Food hygiene
  • Working as part of a team 

What you will learn

  • How to handle and operate kitchen equipment
  • Health and safety within a kitchen environment
  • Cookery processes
  • Training in a realistic Cafe
  • Working as part of a team
  • Barista skills
  • Time management

Placement information

  • During this course, you will be part of in-house work experience program and given the opportunities to work in the college restaurants and bars as well as with some of our many Industry Employer Partners.

How the course is assessed

  • A range of practical activities and work experience

Number of days per week

  • 2 / 3 days per week (maximum of 16 hours)

Entry requirements

  • You must be able to work at SCQF Level 3
  • Have an interest in working within the hospitality and catering industry  
  • Demonstrate good communication skills.

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • You will attend an information session to dicuss the course after application and be given the chance to ask any additional questions.

  • Employment into a cafe/coffee shop
  • City and Guilds Culinary Skills level 1
  • NPA Bakery SCQF Level 4
