Course overview

If you are looking to pursue a career in Roads and Highways Maintenance, then this is the course for you. This award will provide you with the skills you need to enter the industry.   

You will be encouraged to gain a work placement with an employer within the Roadbuilding & Highway Maintenance trade for the duration of this course. These opportunities will be supported by your college lecturers but are not mandatory. 

This course is taught between Edinburgh College classrooms and our workshops where you will gain essential, hands-on and real-life experience in the trade.  

This course is a stepping stone towards employment as a Roadbuilding and Highways Maintenance Operative which can lead to further learning of specialised skills. The course is based at Edinburgh College’s Granton campus.

  • Operate a Powered Tool and Equipment
  • Search for Underground Services
  • Sign, Light and Guard the Work Area
  • Lay Kerbs and Channels
  • Set Out Secondary Dimensional Work Controls
  • Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare
  • Brickwork, Excavation, Concrete and Mixing and Employability Skills
  • Technical Drawing
  • Information Technology

Number of days per week

  • 3 Days Per Week,  Wednesday to Friday over 18 weeks. 
  • January 2025 to June 2025 

Entry requirements

  • Essential - Passes in National 4 English and Mathematics. 

Genuine interest in pursuing a career in road building and highway maintenance. 

  • Desirable – National 5 in Mathematics/Numeracy.  

Prior construction training/experience in the form of either - NPA Construction at level 4 or have completed an Introduction to Construction course. 

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • Be clear in your personal statement why a career in Roadbuilding and Highways Maintenance is appealing to you. 
  • If you meet the entry requirements you will be invited in for an interview/information session. After which offers will be made. 
  • Guaranteed interview for candidates who have completed and passed NPA Construction at level 4 or completed an Introduction to Construction course. 

English Proficiency Requirements

IELTS 5.5 

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • This course provides the underpinning knowledge required to continue to a further education course within the Construction area or gain the experience needed to potentially gain employment.
