Course overview

If your first language is not English, you can study ESOL courses at college. This course will help you improve your English language skills for your schoolwork and offer the full ESOL Higher exam qualification.

The course will get you the qualifications to progress to mainstream college courses or university. The course covers a range of topics relevant to life and study in Scotland.

Our after-school SCP ESOL courses will be online. Our online delivery includes face-to-face digital classrooms and independent learning with teacher support. This will accommodate your individual needs and allow you to study at your own pace. The platform for digital delivery will be Microsoft Teams and Moodle. High-quality teaching, enhanced by technology, will facilitate the development of students’ digital skills.

What you will learn

  • English for reading, listening, and speaking through discussions and debates.
  • Prepare presentations, write reports, formal and informal letters, and essays.
  • Build your vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, develop study skills, and boost your confidence.

Placement information

  • Initial Placement Test for new students to determine their current ESOL level - covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the English language.

How the course is assessed

  • Speaking and listening assessments in November and February.
  • Prelim face-to-face in February.
  • External exam in May.

Number of days per week

  • 2 classes per week
  • Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday (TBC)
  • Afternoons 4.00 PM – 6.30 PM

Entry requirements

  • Achieved an A or B at National 5 ESOL

or

  • Assessed as ready for Higher ESOL on completion of internal placement test

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • Progression to to vocational college courses or university.
