Course overview

This is a 6-month course and is ideal if you are looking to start your career within the Hospitality/Cookery Industry – it will allow you to try out both Cookery and work in our new College Cafe before deciding on your career path.

The course will introduce you to a variety of techniques needed to work in a professional kitchen and a Cafe – you will develop your skills in areas such as:

  • Food and beverage service skills
  • Kitchen skills
  • Food hygiene
  • Working as part of a team

  • How to handle and operate kitchen equipment
  • Health and safety within a kitchen environment
  • Cookery processes
  • Training in a realistic Cafe
  • Working as part of a team
  • Barista skills
  • Time management

Placement information

  • During this course, you will be part of an in-house work experience program and given the opportunities to work in the college restaurants and bars as well as with some of our many Industry Employer Partners.

How the course is assessed

  • A range of practical activities and work experience

Number of days per week

  • 3 days per week (maximum of 16 hours)

Entry requirements

  • You must be able to work at SCQF Level 3
  • Have an interest in working within the hospitality and catering industry  
  • Demonstrate good communication skills.

  • You will attend an information session to discuss the course after application and be given the chance to ask any additional questions.

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • Employment into a cafe/coffee shop
  • City and Guilds Culinary Skills level 1
  • NPA Bakery SCQF Level 4

Career options

  • Kitchen Assistant
  • Front of house within a coffee shop/cafe
  • Progression to C&G Level 1 Professional Cookery or Culinary Skills
  • Progression to NPA Bakery SCQF level 4
