Course overview
The Local Decontamination of Re-Usable Instruments enables you to develop the knowledge and skills required to recognise the importance of decontamination in preventing the spread of infection. It will also enable you to apply your knowledge and skills to ensure reusable instruments are safely and effectively decontaminated in accordance with national guidance for local decontamination.
The Unit will focus on national guidance relevant to facilities, equipment, processes and management.

What you will learn
- Underpinning knowledge of the importance of the decontamination process.
- Knowledge and significance of micro-organisms and infective proteins relevant to the dental environment.
- The importance of reducing the risk of transmission of infection within the dental environment.
- Practical application of this process in a safe and effective manner – conducted within a functioning Local Decontamination classroom.
- The importance of efficacy testing to ensure compliance with regulatory guidance.
Number of days per week
- 4 taught sessions – 3.5 hours each session over an academic session (Provisional start date – October 2026).
Entry requirements
- It is suitable for individuals who undertake or supervise decontamination activities in their workplace.

- Prospective candidates must be referred by their current dental employer.
Progression and Articulation Routes
- Progression opportunities within the dental workplace (decontamination lead).
- Supervision role within the Local Decontamination environment.
Career options
- This course is designed to provide a career pathway into other areas of oral healthcare, e.g., as an LDU supervisor or a dental nurse.
