Edinburgh College marks new partnership with Solid State Logic by taking apart a piano

A group of students from Edinburgh College’s HND Sound Production and Contemporary Art Practice courses had the rather unique task of stripping apart a piano, as part of a new partnership between the College and Solid State Logic.

The College’s Sound Production department has recently joined the SSL Certified Partner Program, which will give our students access to a wide range of quality learning resources, alongside the use of top-of-the-range audio plugin software provided by the company which have helped to shape the modern audio industry.

To celebrate the partnership, students from the Sound Production course joined their peers from the Contemporary Art Practice course for a day of transformation and deconstruction at Edinburgh’s Pianodrome venue. An old College piano was dismantled so that it could be repurposed as an art sculpture, while the activity was captured on video so that the material can be used for future sound design practice, creative projects, and potentially as part of a future installation of the piano.

Johan Englund, curriculum leader for Music & Sound Production, says it was a great opportunity for all involved:

“Our students all had a fantastic time at the Pianodrome, and it was a really valuable learning experience too. It offered them a chance to collaborate with their peers and look at their work from a different perspective, something that will serve them well in future. We hope to see the partnership continue to flourish, and look forward to other opportunities to work together.”
