How to Get Started With an Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is a great way to get valuable, hands-on work experience while gaining a qualification. You can complete an apprenticeship after leaving school or while you're still at school.

Foundation Apprenticeships

Foundation Apprenticeships (FAs) are work-based qualifications for senior-phase secondary school pupils. It’s a qualification that takes you out of the classroom and gets your foot in the door with an employer. You can choose a Foundation Apprenticeship as one of your subjects in S5 or S6. It’s the same level of learning as a Higher (SCQF Level 6).

Edinburgh College and partners offer Foundation Apprenticeships across a wide range of disciplines including:

  • Accountancy
  • Business Skills
  • Civil Engineering
  • Creative and Digital Media
  • Engineering
  • Financial Services
  • Food and Drink Technologies
  • IT: Software Development
  • Scientific Technologies (Laboratory Skills)
  • Social Services and Healthcare

How to apply

If you are interested in applying for a Foundation Apprenticeship you should select College/Foundation Apprenticeship as one of your senior phase subject choices. You will then need to submit an online application form through our website.

If you have any questions, please speak to your guidance teacher, careers advisor or contact the Foundation Apprenticeship team on foundation.apprenticeships@edinburghcollege.ac.uk

Modern Apprenticeships

Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) allow you to learn on the job, and get the experience you need, as well as working towards a qualification.

  • Engineering
  • Fire and Security Systems
