Course overview
Applied Science NC Level 6 is designed to develop your knowledge of the science industry. You will learn the skills needed to progress into employment in the science sector or be prepared for further study of an HNC in Applied Science.
This is a full-time course taught at Edinburgh College’s Sighthill campus. Our Science department offers you the opportunity to study in purpose-built laboratories. These will support the development of your general and specialist practical skills whilst enhancing your theoretical understanding of science. You will learn a range of employer-relevant skills across the science disciplines of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Mathematics.
This course is a stepping stone towards full-time employment or further study that can lead to a university degree. This course does not allow you to register for Higher exams.

- All units within the course must be achieved to gain the full award.

Entry requirements
- A pass at Applied Sciences Level 5 OR a minimum of three National 5 subjects at a minimum of grade C (two of which are Biology and Chemistry).
- National 5 Mathematics at a minimum grade of C. Please note we do not accept Applications of Maths.
- National 5 English is recommended but not mandatory
Note for internal/progressing students: Progression to the next level and from the current course is not a guarantee and will be evaluated for each student at the end of the current course, taking attendance, performance, and assessment attempts into consideration. Progressing students will be issued a conditional offer. An unconditional offer is not a guarantee and will be issued based on the curriculum team review at the end of June.
Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements
- External candidates missing one entry requirement will be placed on a waiting list. In this case, you must pass a diagnostic test for the missing requirement. Diagnostic tests will only be offered if the course does not reach capacity; these will take place provisionally at the end of June.
- Applications from students who wish to repeat a course, have previously been enrolled on any Science course, apply again and/or have previously withdrawn from any Science course will be placed on the waiting list. Applications will only be considered in August if there are places available on the course. If the course reaches capacity before August, an offer will not be possible. Therefore, we advise students to consider other options within the College.
