Course overview

This will be studied as a one-year full-time course, with the option to condense your studies and complete the course more quickly, providing greater flexibility for your next steps.

The full-time will mean attending Edinburgh College's Granton campus either 2.5 days per week, or sometimes working remotley at home or at another space within the college..

This course will teach you the skills needed for a technical role in the Built Environment industry. 

The HNC in Built Environment develops knowledge and skills in areas such as

  • building measurement and cost studies
  • environmental building science
  • building services
  • construction materials and specifications

  • You will be continually assessed throughout the course

Entry requirements

  • One Higher level pass or an NC in a related discipline.
  • If you are a mature applicant, you will be considered on an individual basis.
  • SVQ from a construction-related background.

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • Learners who achieve an HNC Built Environment can progress to the HND in Architectural Technology, Building Surveying, Construction Management, or Quantity Surveying.
  • HNCs can provide progression to degree-level study. The HNC in Built Environment could provide direct entry into the second year of most Built Environment degree programmes.

Career options

  • Prepare you for employment as technicians and supervisors in the mainstream construction industry with a range of employers including Architects, Contractors, building control, housing associations, and other property responsibilities.
