Course overview
If your first language is not English and your school is not entering you for National 5 or Higher English, you can study ESOL courses at college. This course will help you improve your English language skills for your schoolwork and offer the full National 5 ESOL exam qualification.
The National 5 course will provide you with the English language qualification necessary to progress to college courses. It covers a range of topics relevant to life and study in Scotland.
Our after-school SCP ESOL courses will be online. Our online delivery includes face-to-face digital classrooms and independent learning with teacher support. This will accommodate your individual needs and allow you to study at your own pace. The platform for digital delivery will be Microsoft Teams and Moodle. High-quality teaching enhanced by the use of technology will facilitate the development of students’ digital skills.
What you will learn
- English for detailed reading, listening, and speaking through discussions and debates.
- Prepare detailed presentations, write reports, formal and informal letters, and essays.
- Build your vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, study skills and confidence.
Placement information
Schools College Partnership - ESOL Nat 5How the course is assessed
- Speaking and listening assessments in November and February.
- Prelim face-to-face in February.
- External exam in May.

Progression and Articulation Routes
Progression to SQA ESOL Higher SCP course or vocational college courses.
