Course overview

This course is designed to deepen your understanding of trauma, while equipping you with practical strategies to create safe, supportive environments. Through a blend of theory and application, you will learn how to embed trauma-informed principles into everyday practice and work collaboratively to promote resilience and wellbeing.

What you will learn

  • Types of trauma and adverse experiences.
  • Trauma responses and the impact of trauma on children and young people, brain and body, wellbeing and behaviour.
  • Trauma-informed principles and how to apply these in practice.
  • The power of relationships – attachment, safety and resilience.
  • Co-regulation and self-care for professionals.
  • Creating, nurturing, trauma-informed environments.
  • Supporting dysregulation and emotional regulation, and using restorative approaches.
  • Working collaboratively with a child-centred, trauma-informed focus.

  • There is no placement in this course.

How the course is assessed

  • Students will build up a portfolio of knowledge throughout this course; there is no formal assessment. 

Number of days per week

  • 7 weekly sessions, on a Tuesday night, 6.30 PM to 8.30 PM.
  • There is a blended approach, with the first and final classes being held face-to-face at Edinburgh College, Sighthill Campus, and the other classes online on Teams. 
  • Cost: £60.00

  • You should be interested in working with children and young people and be willing to participate in group discussions.
