Course overview

This Vocational Related Qualification (VRQ) provides the essential knowledge and skills for vehicle paint technicians working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and businesses involved with accident repairs. This programme will focus on refinishing techniques and provide learners with a good understanding of the accident repair sector.

This college course is for apprentices already employed in the automotive repair sector.

What you will learn

The programme involves studying both the theory and practical aspects, including:

  • Working with Plastic and Reinforced Components
  • Establishing Paint Defects
  • Blend and Fade Out Repairs
  • Mixing and Matching Colours
  • You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage environment.

How the course is assessed

The assessment is made up of two components which are set by the awarding body: 

  • The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) set practical tasks 
  • IMI set online testing 

Number of days per week

  • Block-release – 8 one-week blocks throughout the academic year

Entry requirements

  • You must be employed within the automotive accident repair industry

Entry qualifications are set by your employer but are generally: 

  • National 4 or above in English, Mathematics, Science or a Technical subject is desirable 
  • A consultation with the employer and Modern Apprenticeship advisor is essential 

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • This automotive trade-specific course will give you a qualification that can progress to further study at a higher level
