This is a popular course that can be studied on either Monday or Thursday evenings. Please indicate which day you are applying for in the personal statement part of your application.
Introduction to Fashion and Textiles 2 is designed for adults and school pupils with a keen interest in this subject, or beginners with little or no prior experience in Fashion and Textiles, who wish to develop their skills and understanding in this area.
You will be introduced to the principles of Fashion and Textiles Design, and this course is suitable for new students and those progressing from Introduction to Fashion and Textiles 1.
You will develop the artistic ability, skills and techniques required to construct a basic garment or accessory, which you will make on the course. Working in the Fashion and Textiles studios, you will be given training on how to use domestic sewing machines and overlockers and garment construction, fabric dyeing, embroidery and embellishment techniques. The course includes pattern cutting for beginners, supporting the design and construction of basic garments or accessories.
Students achieve an SCQF Level 6 SQA unit by successfully passing the course.
This course will ensure you are well prepared to progress onto study at a higher level at an Art College or on one of our full-time courses in the School of Art and Design at Edinburgh College.
How the course is assessed
- This is a practical, studio-based course assessed through portfolio submission at the end of the course.

- One evening per week
- Monday 26 January 2026 (Group A) and Thursday 29 January 2026 (Group B) (either Monday or Thursday, please indicate preference of day in personal statement)
Entry requirements
- A keen interest in Fashion and Textiles.
- Qualifications at SCQF level 4 and 5 or above, including English, that indicate potential to pass the SCQF level 6 SQA unit are beneficial.
- Adult learners with relevant employment or life experience and skills will be considered for entry to this course.

- This course can help students develop skills in Fashion and Textiles and provide coursework for portfolio submissions to further specialist courses in Fashion and Textiles, as well as Art and Design courses.
- Previous evening class students have progressed to our well-recognised UAL Diplomas, NCs, and HNDs, before entering University and employment within the Creative Industries.
