Course overview

This course provides you with the opportunity to explore a wide range of social sciences in national and global contexts. It allows you to study how everyday lives are shaped by factors such as social class, race, religion, family, ethnicity, age, historical events and genetics. 

You will be equipped with the tools to think differently about the complexities of the modern world and to consider contrasting perspectives. 

If you are interested in developing deeper insight into human behaviour and you keep up to date with national and international events, then this is the course for you.

You will gain essential transferable skills in critical and analytical thinking. These broader skills are relevant in both employment and education. Metaskills are embedded throughout the course.

How the course is assessed

  • You will be continually assessed through examinations, essays, reports, portfolios and presentations. 

Number of days per week

  • 3 days per week.
  • You will be expected to study independently for an additional 2 days per week.

Entry requirements

This is an academically challenging course. It is essential that you have the resilience for the physical and mental demands of this course. In order to succeed, you must carefully consider if you have the motivation and time to commit to this level of study.

Minimum requirements

  • National 5 English at Grade B or above (or equivalent).
  • Three National 5s at Grade C or above in a relevant subject (History, Modern Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Politics, RMPS, Maths).
  • A solid personal statement provided in support of your application (this is as important as the qualifications and must be written in your own words).

For progressing students:

  • Pass all units on the Social Science Level 5 course, including a Grade B for National 5 Sociology.
  • Recommendation from the Level 5 academic team (level of engagement, quality of assessments, organisational skills, motivation and attendance will all be considered).

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • You will be given a conditional or unconditional offer based on your application.
  • Emphasis is placed on your personal statement and academic qualifications.

  • This course provides a route to HNC Social Sciences or to other HNC courses.
