Course overview

This course will allow you to explore how societies and humans function objectively.  Throughout the course, you will gain insight into human behaviour, relationships, culture, institutions and social issues.  You will learn to perceive the world differently and develop skills that will be transferable to the private, public and voluntary sectors.

You will gain transferable skills in critical thinking, problem-solving and presentations that are essential to progression in education. This Level 6 course (including passing Higher Sociology with a B grade) will allow you to progress to HNC Social Science and have the option to progress to university if this route is recommended by the academic team.

This is an academic course: you must enjoy reading, writing and researching to succeed. You will also be expected to have excellent organisational skills to manage the demands of the course.

  • You will be continually assessed through examinations, essays, reports and presentations.

Entry requirements

Minimum requirements

  • National 5 English at Grade B or above (or equivalent) 
  • Three National 5s at Grade C or above in a literary relevant subject (History, Modern Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Politics, RMPS, Maths)
  • A solid personal statement provided in support of your application

Preference will be given to those who have at least 1 Higher.

Or

  • Pass at Social Science Level 5 and a C pass in National 5 Sociology
  • Recommendation from Level 5 academic team
  • A solid personal statement provided in support of your application

  • You will be given a conditional or unconditional offer based on your application and you may be invited for an interview. 
  • An emphasis is placed on applicants' personal statements
