Course overview
This course is suitable for individuals currently employed in a management role within a care service. The course will enable students to enhance their professional practice and gain a deeper understanding of their job role. This qualification covers areas such as managing and developing yourself and your workforce within care services, leading and managing practice that promotes the safeguarding of individuals, health and safety in the workplace, and effective communication systems and practices.
This SVQ has been designed to meet the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration requirements for care managers.
Your roles and responsibilities should include:
- Being responsible for managing and developing yourself and your workforce
- Being responsible for the continuing professional development of yourself and others through staff development and performance development review systems
- Establish your understanding and that of others about safeguarding and what action to take in cases of actual or potential harm or abuse
- Hold overall responsibility for budgets and oversee the management and deployment of staff and resources for the service that you manage
- Have overall responsibility for completing quality assurance processes for the service that you manage, for example, Care Inspectorate Annual Returns
- Have overall responsibility for health and safety in the service you manage
- Have overall responsibility for managing and developing workers within the service, for example, through providing or managing the provision of supervision, performance reviews

Funding and Fees
Fee: £1,800
Estimated Duration: 18 months
* Edinburgh College makes every effort to support candidates throughout their qualifications. However, suppose candidates do not engage with the qualification and fail to complete it within the estimated completion period. In that case, Edinburgh College may implement a monthly fee of £150 (for SVQ 2 and SVQ 3) or £218 (for SVQ 4) per candidate for ongoing assessor support. This would not apply if candidates are put on hold for personal or work-related reasons.
Funding
Various funding streams are available to cover some or all costs. These include:
- Fees paid by the employer or the student
- SAAS Part-Time Fee Grants may be available for candidates enrolled in courses at SCQF Level 7 and above who meet the eligibility criteria. SAAS funding would normally part-fund a qualification. Please use this link for more information: Part-time Funding Guide - SAAS.
- Voluntary sector organisations can apply to the Voluntary Sector Development Fund. This is done independently of the College. For more information, please visit the Scottish Social Services Council's Voluntary Sector Development Fund page on Funding Scotland.
- Modern Apprenticeship funding may be available at all levels, subject to the availability of funding allocations. Please note that there are additional requirements for accessing this funding, including completing additional units and attending regular and thorough review meetings. This funding may entirely or partially cover the cost of a qualification, depending on the allocations and levels.

The course contains four mandatory units.
- Manage and Develop Yourself and Your Workforce within the Care Service
- Lead and Manage Practice that Promotes the Safeguarding of Individuals
- Lead and Manage Practice for Health and Safety in the Work Setting
- Lead and Manage Effective Communication Systems and Practices
You will also have to select four optional units; more information about these units can be found in the SQA document.
Placement information
- Your placement will be carried out at your current place of work
How the course is assessed
- This is a work-based qualification, you will be allocated an assessor who will work with you to gather evidence demonstrating you meet the required standards.
Number of days per week
- Flexible learning.
- Regular 1-1 meetings with your workplace assessor, at your workplace, at a college campus or online.

- There is some overlap of Units between the different levels of SVQ, allowing candidates to progress to other Management SVQs as their job role develops or changes.
