Jamie Black-Wilkins Named Electrical Installation Student of the Year

Twenty-eight-year-old Jamie Black-Wilkins has been named our Electrical Installation Student of the Year for 2020.

We caught up with Jamie about his Edinburgh College experience.

What were you doing before starting at the college?

A few different jobs, different courses, most recently a course with the Princes Trust, delivered by Edinburgh College – Introduction to Electrical Installation, this helped me to secure an Apprenticeship.

What has been the best thing so far about studying at Edinburgh College? Any highlights?

Realising you are never too old to hit the books again. That you should try to keep on learning all the time.

Have you faced any challenges, either before starting or during your studies? How did you overcome them?

Beginning to learn again in an academic environment. With the help of my lecturers and some consistent effort on my part we got the cogs turning again.

If you could give one piece of advice to a student starting at the college now, what would it be?

Ask plenty of questions. Be vocal with your thoughts and opinions. Be consistent.

What are your plans for the future? Are you going on to further study after college or into employment? What is your end goal?

I plan to work for myself eventually. I will be back at college to complete the second year of my apprenticeship next term.

Describe your Edinburgh College experience in three words.

Learn. Practice. Do.
