Championes, Ole Ole Ole! Success at Scottish Student Sport National Finals

Edinburgh College has enjoyed another hugely successful day at Scottish Student Sport’s annual College National Finals, held at Heriot-Watt’s Oriam Sports Centre.

With teams competing in football, volleyball, badminton and basketball, there were plenty of opportunities to grab some glory, with our students more than happy to oblige.

HND Networking student Kyle, who was representing the College in badminton, said he was enjoying the competition:

“It’s just fun! It’s fun to beat people, it’s fun to take part. I’ve been playing badminton on and off for years, so when I found out there were opportunities to play for the College, I really wanted to do it. My friends are here cheering me on from the sidelines too, which is really nice.”

As the sun beamed down on the pitches on the outskirts of the city, our two football sides, men’s and women’s, put in a series of fantastic displays, taking on teams from the likes of Fife College, UHI Perth and Glasgow Clyde College.

For our women’s team in particular, there was a lot on the line, as they sought to defend their title from the previous year. There were no signs of pressure getting to the players however, as they delivered several dominating performances to retain their place as the best around.

Scott McDonald, lecturer in Sport & Fitness and coach on the day, said the team should be proud of their efforts:

“Women’s sport and women’s football is really growing and developing fast, and it’s great to see so many students keen to get involved. They’re developing some of the obvious skills, communication and teamwork, but they’re also working on networking, meeting peers from different Colleges, building confidence in unfamiliar environments.

“They show real dedication to come along to events like this and put in the work in training, and you can see when they play how much it means to them. It’s fantastic to get opportunities to play at top-class facilities like the Oriam, and I hope we’ll be back defending the title again next year.”

While City of Glasgow College claimed the cup overall, Edinburgh College pushed them close right to the very end, with all of our students giving it their best across their various sports.  A huge congratulations is in order for everyone who took part, they did themselves and the College proud.
