Yanika rediscovers her creativity at College

HND Costume for Stage and Screen student Yanika Mitchell came to College after a period away from education with the aim of rediscoering her creativity, and now has plans to continue developing her skills to create a career in the costume industry upon completion of her course.

We caught up with Yanika to find out more about her experience at College:

Why did you decide to come to College?

I just felt that I needed an outlet for my creativity. I felt a bit stuck in full time jobs for years and I just needed something new to learn and to, you know, grasp and run with.

What did you do before coming to College?

I went to university straight from school and I've been out of education for about 8 years, and I've been working full time since.

What is the best thing about your course?

I have been sewing for quite a while and having learned on my own, learning it in like an educational environment is good as I didn't know as much as I thought I knew, which is great because I feel like I'm so much more confident in my own now.

What’s the best things about being a student at Edinburgh College?

Being able to meet people who want to be in the industry who are at the same stage as I am, just trying to find their feet and find out exactly what they want to do. That's been really good so far, just to meet and mingle with other people.

Are there any skills that you’ve learned or projects that you’ve worked on that you are particularly proud of?

We started off with women's wear, looking at historical underwear. We did corsetry as a first project, which is a pretty big scary project thinking about it, but it wasn't actually as hard as it looked. So that's been really good to learn and has made me feel more confident in what I’m doing.

How would you describe your college experience in three words?

Supportive, challenging, and fun.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you're thinking of joining the course, come to open days, email the lecturers, reach out on social media. It's really worth coming here. Just go for it!
