This short, industry-recognised course is designed for qualified electricians seeking to develop the knowledge and skills required to design and install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging equipment in domestic and small-commercial settings.
Awarded by City & Guilds, the qualification supports continuing professional development and aligns with the latest industry standards, including the IET Code of Practice and BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.
Delivered over two days, the course combines theory with practical design principles, preparing you to safely install EV charging systems and meet growing demand across the sector.

What you will learn
You will develop a strong understanding of EV charging installation requirements, including:
- Current legislation, regulations, and industry guidance relating to EV installations.
- Types of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), charging modes, and connectors.
- Key design principles such as load calculations, earthing arrangements, and supply capacity.
- Installation requirements, including circuit design, cable selection, and protective devices.
- Inspection, testing, commissioning, and handover procedures.
- Smart charging systems, energy management, and emerging technologies such as V2G and V2H.
The course also includes real-world scenarios and design exercises to help you apply your knowledge in practice.
How the course is assessed
Assessment is via a single online multiple-choice examination:
- 30 questions: online multiple-choice test
- 60 minutes
- Pass mark 75%
- Graded as Pass/Fail
The test covers legislation, equipment types, design, installation, and commissioning.
Number of days per week
- 2-day course.
Entry requirements
This course is intended for practising electricians. To enrol, you must have:
- A recognised Level 3 electrotechnical qualification (e.g. SVQ in Electrical Installation at SCQF level 7 or equivalent).
or
- An ECS Gold Card (Installation, Maintenance, or Domestic Electrician) issued by Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB) or Joint Industry Board (JIB).
