Course overview

This course is for school pupils only.

The National Progression Award (NPA) will introduce you to the field of criminology, including its history and the role of the media in reporting crime. You will also be introduced to the physical and psychological evidence available at a crime scene and will develop an understanding of how the criminal justice system operates.

The nature of criminology is challenging and includes sensitive topics such as domestic violence and sexual abuse. Learners must assess whether this course is suitable for their needs.

What you will learn

  • Criminology: Crime in the Community - This unit will explore how crime is addressed in local communities through policy and the criminal justice system.
  • Criminology: Crime Scenes - This unit will develop an understanding of the different types of physical evidence available at a crime scene, the importance of preserving evidence, and how this evidence is utilised. You will also develop an understanding of psychological evidence available at a crime scene and how that information can be used to understand the scene.
  • The History and Development of Criminology - This unit will introduce you to the historical development of criminology as an academic discipline. You will develop an understanding of the theories concerning the nature of crime and the criminal throughout time.
