Course overview

NQ Film and Television Production Level 6 is a full-time course that introduces you to the fundamentals of the Film and TV industries, combining academic and practical learning and teaching. If you are interested in a career in TV or Film, or further study specifically in this area, this course is for you.

You will gain an understanding of job roles and responsibilities, industry processes, and factors affecting content development and distribution in the screen industries. You will learn about screen narrative and analyse professional screen texts. You will also learn how to use camera and sound recording equipment, lighting and editing software.

Over the course of the year, you will:

  • Pitch proposals 
  • Research and develop content
  • Script
  • Carry out pre-production tasks such as recces and risk assessments
  • Organise shoots, using relevant tools such as shot lists and call sheets
  • Operate camera, sound and lighting equipment and editing software
  • Work as part of a group to produce short videos
  • Screen your work to your peers
  • Evaluate your performance in different roles
  • Write reports and essays
  • Deliver presentations

This course is an ideal foundation for HNC Television and Film and also offers progression into other Creative Industries courses, such as HNC Media and Communication: Digital Journalism, Audio Visual Technology and HNC Television (with Multicam Operations).

How the course is assessed

  • A mixture of written and presentation tasks and practical projects

Please note that units in this course require students to operate equipment and software independently. You may also want to consider Creative Media Production and Technology (UAL L3) at the same level.

Number of days per week

  • 3 days per week of college classes, plus additional self-directed study time required.

Entry requirements

  • Minimum of three passes at SCQF Level 5 (Grade C or above)

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • All applicants will be invited to interview and should bring examples of creative work and be prepared to discuss film and television, and why they are suitable for this course.

English Proficiency Requirements

IELTS 5.5 (Where English isn't the first language)
