Course overview

The PDA in Promoting Excellence in Dementia Skilled Practice at SCQF level 7 is a qualification designed for health and social care support workers and practitioners who have direct and/or substantial contact with people with Dementia and their families and carers, to develop the knowledge and skills required to carry out their duties.

It is suitable for:

  • Those who wish to enhance their career prospects in health and social care
  • CPD for those currently employed in the sector

What you will learn

The course comprises three units, one of which is an SVQ unit. These units will cover the following content:

  • Knowledge and understanding relating to the dementia journey
  • The importance of promoting the rights of people with dementia
  • Understanding the importance of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing
  • Current key legislation, policies and procedures which support people with dementia
  • Support services that can assist people with Dementia and their families

Placement information

  • There is no placement element to this course. You will, however, need to be in a role caring for people with Dementia.

How the course is assessed

  • The course is assessed through a variety of summative written assessments and workplace assessments, including observation, witness testimony, and reflection.

Number of days per week

  • One day per week online.
  • The course will be delivered through a combination of online classroom teaching, one-on-one support, and self-directed study. 
  • 18-week course

Entry requirements

  • You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work at SCQF level 7. 
  • You will also need to be in a role caring for people with dementia, as a demonstration of knowledge through practice is required for the SVQ unit.
