Course overview
This course is designed to enable you to gain knowledge and understanding of additional support needs of children and young people and how to meet those needs in practice with current legislation and policy.
The course will investigate agencies and professionals offering support to children and young people with additional support needs and their families.
You will have the opportunity to observe and evaluate strategies used to support children and young people with additional support needs in real situations. You will also have the chance to reflect on these strategies and apply them to your practice.
The course starts with an introduction to the concept of ‘additional support needs’ followed by an analysis and evaluation of the theory that you are expected to apply to practice.
The topics studied will introduce you to the importance of understanding the factors that influence additional support needs and allow you to explore ways of successfully supporting a range of additional support needs including behaviour.
This course also enables learners to assess and evaluate additional support needs in children and young people by applying a range of observational techniques.
The fee for this course is £120.

Placement information
- You will be currently working or volunteering on a regular basis in a childcare setting and have the appropriate PVG in place before commencing this unit.

Number of days per week
- One session per week for 10 weeks on an open learning basis where you work through the course materials in your own time.
- Support sessions with a lecturer are available on Microsoft Teams, email or phone.
Entry requirements
- 2 Highers or equivalent qualification at SCQF 6 (NC, SVQ 2)
- Applicants without formal entry requirements but with a significant amount of experience in working with children will also be considered. Please detail this in your Personal Statement.
- As the units are delivered online, applicants should be confident in using IT to access the course.
- You must be currently working or volunteering in the childhood practice sector.

English Proficiency Requirements
To enable our students the best opportunity of achieving this course, applicants for whom English is an additional language require an existing English language certificate at IELTS Level 5.5 or equivalent. Alternatively, additional language applicants will be required to undertake an English Language Assessment at College, free of cost. English proficiency at IELTS Level 5.5 or equivalent is a course entry requirement.
