Course overview

This 1-year HNC course, which offers an HNC certificate, allows you to progress to the second year of the HND in Web Development.

This course will develop your skills in Web Development and associated technologies. You will be taught by industry-experienced College lecturers and learn a diverse range of knowledge in: Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript, Structured Query Language (SQL), Web Graphics, User Interface (UI), JavaScript and Social Media marketing.

This hands-on and practical course will enhance your employability skills. Edinburgh College has strong industry connections with Edinburgh-based digital companies. This course offers you an up-to-date award that reflects recent developments within the web design and development sector.

Each subject area you cover is tailored to the jobs available in the industry, providing the best education to help you progress towards a successful career. You will master the latest software packages, such as Adobe, and learn about dynamic website development. This course will ensure you are well-prepared for employment, self-employment, or second-year HND studies in web development and digital media.

Placement information

  • There may be opportunities for work experience during the course. These will be encouraged by your college lecturers, but are not mandatory.

  • There will be one exam.

Entry requirements

  • For school leavers: Three Highers consisting of a B grade Pass in English or Communications and two other C passes.
  • For college students: SCQF Level 6 course in a relevant subject such as Software Development and Web.
  • All enquiries are welcome regardless of qualifications. Edinburgh College computing staff can assess where you can start or progress in your computing career and find the right course.
  • You will need to complete an online screening exercise to assess your skills.

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • You will attend an interview and be asked to complete a screening exercise to assess your skills and abilities. The screening activity is online, and you complete it in your own time.

English Proficiency Requirements

IELTS 6.0, with no component below 5.

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • You can progress to the 2nd Year HND Web Development. After the second year (HND), you can progress to the third year of BSc Web Development at Edinburgh Napier University.
  • Other university options are available for students entering their first or second year of study.
  • Self-employment as a web designer/developer.

Career options

  • Employment in the interactive media or web development industry.
  • Self-employment as a web designer and developer.
