College Helps Charlie to Brush Up in New Career

Twenty-five-year-old Charlie Scott decided to come to College to change career. Previously he was a full-time support worker, now he’s a qualified painter and decorator with East Lothian Council. He was named Apprentice of the Year Painting and Decorating at Prize Giving 2019. Read about Charlie’s College experience below.

How do you feel about being recognised at Prize Giving?

I didn’t expect this at all, so I’d say I am shocked, but also proud to be recognised.

What made you choose Edinburgh College for your studies?

My work sent me to college and Edinburgh College was their choice. I am glad though as the facilities here for my course are great.

What were you doing before starting at the College?

I was working full-time in support work which is very different to the job I do now.

What has been the best thing so far about studying at Edinburgh College? Any highlights?

The best thing is seeing the natural progression from the start of the course to the end. I just passed my skills test the other week and couldn’t have done that without the help from my lecturers.

Have you faced any challenges, either before starting or during your studies? How did you overcome them?

Every assessment, whether that be theory or practical was a challenge but with the help of my lecturers and my employer, I have managed to get through it.

If you could give one piece of advice to a student starting at the college now, what would it be?

My advice would be to enjoy it and not to stress. I think if you are enjoying what you are studying you tend to get better results.

What are your plans for the future? Are you going on to further study after college or into employment? What is your end goal?

I hope to continue working with East Lothian Council as a qualified painter and decorator for the time being. In the future, I would like to try my hand in a management role but that’s not something on my radar any time soon.

What are you most proud of that you have achieved while studying at Edinburgh College?

Winning this award has got to be up there! I never imagined I’d be recognised for anything like this.

Describe your Edinburgh College experience in three words.

Fun, rewarding, memorable.
