How to Turn Your Hobby Into a Career

If you are passionate about something and looking for a new venture, you could consider changing your career to work on your passion full-time. We’ve put together some guidance for career changers that might help you decide where to start.

Start your own business

If you have a great idea for a product or service, and the motivation to get started, then working on your business strategy is the first step. Firstly, you will need to create a business plan. This will outline all the goals you want to achieve and how you will achieve them. It will also help to plan your finances by outlining the cash flow, budget and expenses. There are courses that can help to get to grips with the basics of accounting like Accounting HND.

You will also need to understand how to market your product or service. The Business with Digital Marketing HNC course can teach you website tools and techniques, introduction to marketing and business communication.

Learn something new in your spare time

If there’s a qualification you need in order to change your career, then consider coming back to education part-time. A part-time or evening course means you can study around work commitments. By the end of your course you will have the skills to switch to your brand new career. For example, our Art Portfolio Preparation course can help give you the tools needed to apply to art school. Or if you enjoy speaking to people and giving advice then Introduction to Counselling could be the course for you. Both of these courses are available to study in the evening, meaning you can keep working.

Choose something you’re passionate about

They say if you do something you are passionate about then you will never work a day in your life. There are lots of part-time and evening courses in a range of vocational subjects. Here are a few to choose from:

Photography

If you enjoy sharing your best photos on Instagram and want to improve your technique then our Digital Photography Basics course, taught in the evening, is perfect for you.

Fashion

If you enjoy flicking through magazines or making your own clothes, the fashion industry might be where your next career is. At Edinburgh College you can study Introduction to Fashion and Textiles which could help you get started in this exciting industry.

Interior design

Develop your artistic ability and get a keen eye for light and colour with Introduction to Interior Design. This course leads onto a variety of art and design courses that you can progress on to.

Whatever you want to do, we have a wide range of courses that can help you get where you want to go!
