Wellbeing Tips – New Things to Try and Things to Remember
Studying and working at home for a long period of time is not something that any of us have been used to be before, but it is becoming something of a ‘new normal’. During this time, it is vital that we stay connected with our classmates, friends, colleagues and those we socialise with.
The College’s Wellbeing team is available to support you and has provided this list of tips and advice to help us while we all #StayAtHome. The Wellbeing team along with useful information can also be accessed via Moodle.
Below are some suggestions to keep you busy and mentally healthy during this time.
Write down ten things you feel grateful for in life and why
This might feel really hard to do just now when life feels really challenging for everyone, however there is evidence that remembering the things we appreciate and are grateful for can help to boost our wellbeing. For example, you may be grateful that you have a particular skill, perhaps good organisational ability that has meant you have been able to plan and structure your days well, or it might be gratitude for a friend, classmate, colleague or loved one who makes you laugh even when things are tough. We challenge you to find ten, go!
Notice five things that are beautiful in the world around you
Now could be a good time to think of the beautiful things that surround you. What do you see that brings positivity to your day? Might it be the daffodils beginning to flower, people coming together to support one another, maybe even that you have learned something new and wonderful about yourself.
Thank three people you’re grateful to and tell them why
We all have people in our lives that we are grateful for as they listen, support, help or provide guidance to us. When was the last time you told them you were grateful and why? You could do this by sending them a letter, text, video, card or simply by calling them. This is sure to put a smile on their face, and yours.
Do three acts of kindness to help others, however small
Small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Why not remind someone close that you love them, post positive quotes/photos on social media, send a card in the post or why not even give someone a smile.
Learn something new or do something creative
Being creative helps the mind to focus, which in times like these would be a great idea with its calming effects on the mind and body. Learning something new gives you the opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge about something that interests you. Post your ideas, or look for suggestions on the Edinburgh College Virtual Campus, or ask a classmate, friend, or colleague if they have tried something new recently.
Remember that all situations and feelings pass in time
At the moment it feels like there is no end in sight. However please remember that with time situations and feelings will pass. In the meantime, remember the tips we have given you to help you stay positive, healthy, and connected during this time.
