New course to help students acquire in-demand Data Science skills

Edinburgh College has launched a new Skills Boost for Data Science course which promises to equip attendees with vital Data Science skills which are becoming even more in demand with employers. The course is a five-week full-time course that provides with the essential knowledge and analytical skills needed for a Data Science role.

What is Data Science?

Data Science is becoming an essential part of how we live, learn and work. It is about how we get actions from insights. Many people are keen to learn more and understand this topic and using the knowledge and skills from this short course will help you to develop your current or future job role.  More and more employers are seeking applicants with experience of Data Science.

The field of Data Science combines digital and data skills, specific knowledge about a particular topic or subject area, and numeracy skills to extract insights and knowledge from data. The ability to identify the problem to solve, the correct data to use, carry out the analysis and then implement the outcome requires all three areas to be brought together.

This course is open to people of all ages and abilities.

Monday 28 June 2021.

How is the course delivered?

This course will be delivered virtually through Microsoft Teams, you should be able to fit the content and learning around other commitments. The learning materials will be accessible through Moodle, Edinburgh College’s virtual learning environment at moodle.edinburghcollege.ac.uk.

You will be able to sign in with your Edinburgh College student number once the course has started. The College also provides all students with access to Office 365, you can sign into Microsoft Office, Email and Teams at office.com with your Edinburgh College email address.

The course will be entirely online with no live virtual class meetings for the duration of the five-week course. You will be provided with video tutorials, online study materials, learner forums and a dedicated lecturer providing feedback on submitted activities using an ePortfolio system.

How long will the course last?

The course is studied over five weeks with no more than ten hours of studying per week.

What will I need to complete the course?

You will need a computer with:

– an up-to-date version of Windows or Mac OS operating system
– speakers or headphones
– internet access

Will I receive financial support to complete this course?

No. This course is a free short course and available for you to learn online from home.

How much is the course?

This course is free as it is funded by the Young Persons Guarantee fund and the National Training Transition Fund so is open to all ages.

What is the entry criteria for the course?

There are no formal entry requirements.

What qualification will I get?

National Progression Award in Data Science at SCQF level 4.
