New Edinburgh College course helps dance teachers bring their teaching to the next level

An innovative Edinburgh College course is helping dance teachers across Scotland inspire the next generation, with all of the first cohort of students successfully completing the Dance Teaching in Schools course and taking what they have learned directly into the classroom.

The Dance Teaching in Schools course aims to help dance teachers enhance their practical expertise and academic understanding of dance education to ensure they are well-equipped to teach and inspire the next generation of dancers.

Designed specifically for secondary school teachers progressing from SCQF Level 7 to SCQF Level 8, the new course has enabled participants to confidently deliver NPA through to Higher Dance qualifications with enhanced skill, creativity, and subject knowledge. Through a carefully balanced programme of dance technique (Jazz and Contemporary), choreography, and contextual studies, the course aims to help enhance students practice by bringing innovative approaches back into their classrooms.

Teachers who have completed the course highlight improved student engagement, stronger choreography outcomes, and a clearer understanding of how to support learners through national qualifications in dance.

Dance Teaching in Schools student Daisy Forbes said: “My experience on the Dance Teaching course has been extremely positive in a number of ways. I have developed my knowledge and understanding of dance in different forms, enhanced my own practical ability and increased my confidence when creating choreography. In addition, we have made a fantastic network with other dance teachers and made friends for life! I always found the staff around campus to be friendly and accommodating. It is a great environment to be in!”

The flexible structure – combining in-person and online learning – has allowed participants to successfully balance study alongside their teaching commitments. Participants report that the blend of practical sessions and academic assessment not only strengthened their own dance technique, but also transformed their teaching methods, ultimately benefiting their pupils’ learning experiences.

Winifred Jamieson, Head of Department, Visual & Performing Arts, Academy of Creative Industries, Culture and Languages, said: “This course is about empowering teachers to refine their own artistry while developing the confidence and expertise to inspire the next generation of dancers. The progress we see in participants – from skilled practitioners to highly confident educators – is truly exceptional.”
