Course overview

Fabricators and Welders are crucial to the renewables sector in Scotland, where demand for skilled workers is high. This course is designed to provide you with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required for fabrication and welding.

By completing this course, you will be better prepared to apply for an apprenticeship in welding, fabrication or another Engineering discipline. Our training program will equip you with the practical skills and interview preparation to meet the standards of local employers.

They are a well-established, fast-growing steel fabrication company based in Tranent, working with clients across the UK and supporting major industries, including rail, energy, and infrastructure.

As part of the course, you will visit their site, meet the team, and see real engineering projects in action, gaining first-hand insight into their workplace.

This is a college-developed SCQF level 5 equivalent, offered only to current residents of East Lothian.

How the course is assessed

  • This course is continuously assessed for your practical skills and general engagement.

Number of days per week

  • 2.5 days per week, one day at Midlothian Campus and 1.5 days at Wallyford STEAM Centre.

Entry requirements

  • Resident in East Lothian
  • National 4 Maths and English are preferred
  • A practical subject such as Craft, Design and Technology

  • You will be invited to a recruitment session at Midlothian Campus.

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • Progression to a Modern Apprenticeship.
  • Access to Engineering Course.

Career options

  • Apprentice Fabricator/Welder or Apprentice Manufacturing Engineer or further full-time study.
