Course overview

This course is specifically designed for school pupils with additional support needs or learning barriers who are beginning to explore life after secondary education. It provides a gentle, supportive transition into the college environment, allowing students to build confidence while staff assess their suitability for future college programs.

This course is delivered at Milton Road and Sighthill, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 AM to 12 PM.

What you will learn

Course Overview: Introduction to College (SCQF Levels 1 and 2)

This course is designed to provide pupils with a positive transition experience as they prepare for life after school. By participating in a college environment, students can build confidence while staff assess their suitability for future full-time supported programs.

What to Expect

The curriculum is designed to give students a realistic taste of student life through a variety of learning experiences:

  • Broad Subject Range: Pupils explore a wide variety of practical and classroom-based subjects.
  • College Familiarisation: The course helps students become familiar with the college campus, routines, and environment.
  • Preparation for Level 1–2: The topics covered mirror those found in our full-time SCQF Level 1 and 2 courses, providing a clear pathway for future study.

Number of days per week

  • Two morning sessions per week.

Entry requirements

There are no formal academic entry requirements for this course. It is specifically designed for:

  • Current Learning Level: Pupils who are typically working at SCQF Level 1 or 2 within their school curriculum.
  • Support Profile: Students with identified additional support needs or learning barriers who require a supported transition to a college environment.
  • Engagement: Pupils who are ready to experience a broad range of practical and classroom-based subjects to prepare for future study.

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

To ensure a safe and successful transition, we require a high level of collaboration from our school partners. The following expectations are in place to support every student's individual needs:

  • Nominated Person: School staff must support all applications and act as the Nominated Person to ensure that all college communications are received and that any offer conditions are met.
  • One-to-One Support and Personal Care: If a student receives 1-to-1 support or requires personal care within the school setting, this level of support must be mirrored at college. The school remains responsible for providing and funding this dedicated support during college hours to ensure the student's safety and wellbeing.
  • Conditional Offers: All places are strictly conditional upon the college receiving up-to-date support information via the Schools Tracker. This data is essential for the college to prepare the learning environment appropriately.
  • Dedicated Point of Contact: The SCP Coordinator for Supported Schools Programs is the designated point of contact for all communication between the school and the college regarding these requirements.

Progression and Articulation Routes

Progression Routes: SCQF Levels 1 and 2

Students who complete the Introduction to College course at SCQF Level 1–2 are better prepared for transition into full-time college life. Upon leaving school, students may progress to one of the following full-time courses:

  • Supported College Experience: A program designed to continue building confidence in a structured college environment.
  • Skills for Independence: Focused on developing the practical life skills necessary for students to move toward greater autonomy.
